The Opportunity You Can’t Yet See

Have you ever looked back on your life and realised that one seemingly small decision changed everything?

Perhaps it was accepting a new job.

Moving to a different town.

Starting a new hobby.

Speaking to someone you almost walked past.

At the time, it probably didn’t feel like a life-changing moment.

Yet months or years later, you can trace so many positive events back to that single decision.

I’ve become fascinated by this idea.

The Journey Rarely Looks Like the Plan

Recently I came across a concept known as The Law of Precession, popularised by the architect, inventor and futurist Buckminster Fuller.

In science, precession describes how movement in one direction often creates another movement at a different angle.

Fuller believed a similar principle often appears in life.

His famous example was the humble bee.

A bee doesn’t fly from flower to flower thinking about pollinating plants.

Its goal is simply to collect nectar.

Yet while pursuing that goal, it unintentionally performs one of the most important jobs in nature by helping flowers reproduce through pollination.

The bee achieves something remarkable without ever setting out to do it.

I think our own lives often work in much the same way.

We Can’t Predict Every Opportunity

Many people delay taking action because they want certainty.

They want to know exactly where the road leads before taking the first step.

The difficulty is that life rarely works like that.

Many of the biggest opportunities we experience aren’t visible at the beginning of the journey.

They appear because we started moving.

Imagine This…

Imagine someone decides they’d like to earn a little extra income each month.

Nothing dramatic.

Perhaps enough to help pay for a holiday.

Maybe some home improvements.

Or simply to create a little more financial breathing room.

So they begin searching online.

That search introduces them to digital marketing.

They join a learning community.

They develop new skills.

Along the way they meet people from different countries, backgrounds and professions who all share a similar desire to improve their lives.

One conversation leads to another.

Someone recommends a book.

Someone else suggests attending an event.

At that event they meet future business partners.

One new friend introduces them to property investing.

Another introduces them to artificial intelligence.

Another recommends a completely different business opportunity.

Five years later, their life looks completely different.

Not because they planned every twist and turn.

But because they were willing to take the very first step.

Often, the people we meet become just as important as the skills we learn. A single mentor, conversation or introduction can completely change the direction of your journey. That’s something I explore further in Why Every Successful Person Has Someone They Learn From.

Progress Creates Possibility

This is something I’ve noticed repeatedly.

Action creates information.

Information creates opportunities.

Opportunities create new decisions.

And those decisions open doors that were completely invisible at the beginning.

That’s one reason I believe progress is so important.

You don’t need the whole map.

You only need enough courage to take the next sensible step.

Don’t Let Uncertainty Stop You

One of the biggest causes of overwhelm is imagining every step before you’ve even taken the first one.

We project ourselves years into the future.

We imagine every obstacle.

Every difficulty.

Every possible way things could go wrong.

No wonder we feel stuck.

Instead, try asking yourself a much simpler question.

“What’s the next worthwhile step I can take today?”

That’s usually all you need to know.

Once you’ve taken that step, the next one often becomes much clearer.

Looking Back

If you ask successful people how they arrived where they are today, very few will describe a perfectly planned journey.

Most will tell you about unexpected meetings.

Unexpected opportunities.

Unexpected setbacks.

Unexpected discoveries.

Life has a remarkable way of rewarding people who continue moving forward with curiosity and an open mind.

Very often, the opportunity that changes everything isn’t the one you set out looking for.

It’s the one you discover along the way.

Stay Curious

We all want certainty.

We all want to know we’re making the right decision.

But perhaps that’s asking too much.

Perhaps the better approach is simply to take thoughtful action, stay curious and remain open to where the journey leads.

You may not be able to see the opportunity that’s waiting for you today.

That doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Sometimes the most important opportunities in our lives only become visible after we’ve had the courage to take the first step.
