Change Your Body, Change Your Day

Have you ever noticed how differently you think after a good walk?
Or how much easier it is to solve a problem after you’ve been to the gym, spent time outside or simply taken a break from your desk?
I certainly have.
It’s one of the reasons I’ve become convinced that changing your physical state can often change your mental state too.
When we feel stuck, overwhelmed or unmotivated, our first instinct is often to keep thinking about the problem.
Sometimes the better answer is to stop thinking altogether and simply move.
Your Environment Matters More Than You Think
In an earlier article, Work Environment Change, I talked about the surprising impact our surroundings can have on the way we work.
The same principle applies to almost every area of life.
Our environment influences our energy.
Our energy influences our thinking.
And our thinking influences the decisions we make.
A change of scenery can often create a change of perspective.
That’s why so many people come back from a walk with a fresh idea that simply wouldn’t arrive while staring at the same screen in the same room.
Your Body and Mind Work Together
It’s easy to think of the mind and body as separate.
In reality, they’re constantly influencing one another.
When we’re tired, hungry, dehydrated or have been sitting still for hours, it’s hardly surprising if our motivation starts to disappear.
Likewise, after a period of movement, fresh air or exercise, many of us notice we feel more energised, optimistic and focused.
You don’t need to understand every biological process to experience the effect.
Most of us have felt it ourselves.
Sometimes the quickest way to improve your thinking is to improve the condition you’re thinking in.
Find What Works For You
Everyone is different.
For me, it’s usually the gym.
Sometimes it’s getting out on my bike.
Other people find the same benefit from swimming, gardening, hiking or simply walking the dog.
The activity itself isn’t the important part.
The important part is interrupting whatever negative cycle you’ve fallen into and replacing it with something that changes your physical state.
I’ve learned over the years that when my energy changes, my outlook usually changes too.
Problems often feel smaller.
Ideas come more easily.
Motivation returns.
Small Habits Create Big Results
Changing your state doesn’t have to involve an hour in the gym.
Sometimes it’s as simple as:
- Standing up and stretching.
- Drinking a glass of water.
- Walking around the block.
- Spending ten minutes outside.
- Taking a break from your screen.
- Listening to music that lifts your mood.
These are all small actions.
But small actions have a habit of changing the direction of a day.
And enough better days eventually become a better life.
Real change rarely happens overnight. It usually begins with one small decision followed by another. That’s an idea I explore further in The Power to Change.
The Story We Tell Ourselves
One thing I’ve become increasingly aware of is the stories we tell ourselves.
When we’re exhausted or frustrated, it’s easy to believe that nothing is working.
That we’ll never succeed.
That we’re simply not capable.
Yet remarkably, those same problems often look completely different after a good night’s sleep or a burst of exercise.
The circumstances haven’t changed.
But our perspective has.
That’s why I try not to make important decisions when I’m tired, stressed or mentally drained.
I’ve learned to change my state first.
Then decide.
Put Yourself in the Best Position to Succeed
Success isn’t only about knowledge.
It’s also about putting yourself in a position where you can use that knowledge well.
Looking after your body isn’t separate from building your future.
It’s part of it.
Good sleep.
Nutritious food.
Regular movement.
Fresh air.
Time away from your desk.
None of these guarantee success.
But they make it much easier to show up each day with the energy, clarity and focus needed to recognise opportunities when they appear.
Move More
We all have days when motivation disappears.
That’s perfectly normal.
The important thing is remembering that you don’t always have to think your way into feeling better.
Sometimes you can move your way into feeling better.
A walk.
A workout.
A bike ride.
A change of scenery.
A few minutes outdoors.
Never underestimate how much these simple actions can influence the way you think, feel and respond to the challenges in front of you.
Sometimes changing your body is the first step towards changing your day.
