The Power of “Until”

sprout growing from an old stump

Sometimes the smallest words have the biggest impact.

One word that has helped me over the years is:

Until.

It’s such a simple word that it’s easy to overlook.

Yet it has the power to completely change the way we think about goals, challenges and setbacks.

The Difference Between Trying And Committing

Many of us say things like:

“I’ll give it a go.”

“I’ll see how it goes.”

“I’ll try.”

There’s nothing wrong with those phrases.

But they leave the door open to giving up the moment things become difficult.

Now compare them with this:

“I’ll keep going until I achieve it.”

That feels different.

The goal is no longer tied to a fixed number of attempts.

It’s tied to persistence.

The Mindset Of “Until”

Think about these examples:

  • I’ll keep learning until I understand it.
  • I’ll keep practising until I become confident.
  • I’ll keep improving until I reach my goal.
  • I’ll keep building my business until it becomes sustainable.
  • I’ll keep developing new skills until I create more freedom.

Notice what changes.

The question is no longer if you’ll continue.

It’s simply how long it will take.

That’s a subtle but powerful shift in mindset.

We Expect Persistence From Children

The late personal development speaker Jim Rohn once asked an interesting question:

“How long do you give the average baby to learn to walk?”

The obvious answer is:

As long as it takes.

No parent watches a toddler fall over a few times and concludes that walking simply isn’t for them.

We expect persistence.

We encourage it.

We celebrate every small improvement.

Yet as adults, we often become much less patient with ourselves.

A few setbacks and we begin questioning whether we’re capable at all.

Progress Rarely Happens In A Straight Line

Learning any worthwhile skill takes time.

There will be mistakes.

Moments of frustration.

Days when it feels like nothing is happening.

That’s completely normal.

Progress isn’t usually dramatic.

It’s the result of showing up consistently, learning from experience and continuing long enough for those small improvements to compound.

The people who eventually succeed aren’t always the most talented.

Often, they’re simply the ones who stayed in the game longer.

Knowing When To Change Direction

Of course, persistence doesn’t mean refusing to adapt.

Sometimes the strategy needs to change.

Sometimes the approach needs refining.

Sometimes we discover a better path.

But changing your method isn’t the same as abandoning your goal.

Stay flexible in how you get there.

Stay committed to why you started.

Persist Until..

Whenever you find yourself facing a challenge, try adding one small word to your thinking:

Until.

It reminds you that success is rarely about perfection.

It’s about persistence.

Because every expert was once a beginner.

Every achievement started with a first step.

And every meaningful goal becomes a little more achievable when you decide you’ll keep moving forward…

Until.

Persistence becomes even more powerful when it’s combined with another simple habit: asking yourself what you’ll do differently next time.
